Things to do in Tulum

Cenotes Tulum

Tulum and the entire Yucatán Peninsula is known for cenotes. A cenote is a deep, water filled sinkhole that has natural pools that make their way to the surface when the underground cavern collapses. Some cenotes are caves or caverns, some are open and some are semi-open. There’s plenty of cenotes to choose from. We visited two of what we thought were the best cenotes in Tulum, Cenote Dos Ojos and Cenote Calavera.

Cenote Dos Ojos

Cenote Dos Ojos in north Tulum is quite possibly the most popular and most visited cenote in Tulum. It’s a cave cenote with some of the clearest water we’ve ever seen. You can swim, snorkel and explore inside the cave!
Cost: $300 pesos/person (snorkeling) – cash only.
Tips: This is a natural cave so there will probably be fish in the water and bats may fly around in the cave.
Location: Northern part of Tulum as you’re driving from Cancún to Tulum.

Cenote Calavera

Cenote Calavera is just West of Downtown Tulum past the supermarkets. Like Dos Ojos, Cenote Calavera is another super popular Cenote in Tulum and, one we might argue, is the best cenote in Tulum. It’s basically a massive sinkhole/ swimming hole cave with 3 holes to jump in from. The big hole is the shortest distance around 7 ft high jump then there are two small holes that look like you’re disappearing into the rock formation. These two holes are 14 feet deep and 8-10 feet deep respectively for your jump.
Cost: $200 pesos/person (for snorkeling)
5 minute drive west of Downtown Tulum

Other cenotes near Tulum:

Gran Cenote Tulum
Cenote Car Wash
Casa Cenote
Cenote Pet Cemetery
Clan Destino Cenote Bar

Visit Laguna Kaan Luum

Technically Laguna Kaan Luum is a cenote, but we feel like it deserves its own space. This once hidden gem in Tulum has quickly become a very popular spot to visit and might have been one of our favorite things to do in Tulum.
Cost: $100 pesos/person (snorkeling) and $150 pesos to fly a drone
Tips: Get there early if you’re after the best Insta shots. It’ll be relatively empty! The clay is said to have healing properties, so rub it all over!

Murals in Tulum Town

We have a serious addiction to mural hunting! Whether we’re looking for murals in Austin, dreaming of awesome Dallas murals and even Tulum… We found ourselves in search of murals while in Tulum Town. We always find a connection with the colors, graphics and stories told within the art, and Tulum’s murals were no exception.

Shopping in Tulum

Whether you’re shopping in the Tulum Beach area or Tulum Town, both have plenty of spots to keep you busy for days. The main street through Tulum Town is riddled with your typical tourist-trap style of shops, but if you stray from there, you’ll find some great, local shops that will wow you.
The Tulum Beach area certainly has more “trendy” shops. Filled with all of the best on-trend clothes, jewelry and everything else you might be able to dream up.

Enjoy the Best Restaurants in Tulum

Our experience eating in Tulum was exactly that, an incredible experience. It’s a foodie’s paradise, paired with an unrivaled sense of culture and sustainability. You can feel it in the ingredients used, the flavors displayed and the people. There is something about Tulum food that draws you in to not only the food, but the entire town.

Relax on the beach

Afterall, Tulum Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches… You can’t visit without spending at least a little time on the beach. In our guide to Tulum, we laid out how you can gain access to the beach clubs and where you should stay if beach time is something you want to maximize.

Ride Bikes

One of the best ways to get around the Tulum Beach area is riding bikes. Bike rentals in Tulum are fairly easy to come by and range in price from $3/day to $15/day. Ask your hotel concierge who they recommend. If you don’t have a concierge, just take a stroll down the beach road, you’ll see plenty of places to rent bikes.

Visit IK Lab at AZULIK Tulum

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make it here while we were in Tulum. But if you can squeeze in a visit to IK Lab Tulum, you totally should! IK Lab is a visual masterpiece made to showcase some of the most unique artforms you’ll ever see.
Cost: They run off of donations. Don’t be a jerk. Give a donation!
Tip: If you come in with big cameras/ looking like a pro photographer, they may ask you to leave or ask you to pay a fee.

Find All the Best Instagram Spots in Tulum

Spots like Coco Tulum and Azulik Tulum are certainly the epitome of instagram-worthy, but there isn’t an area of Tulum that wouldn’t make for the perfect backdrop for a great insta-shot! From random walkways to the entrances to restaurants, you can’t go more than a minute without being surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Swim With the Turtles at Akumal Beach

This one was a bucket list item for us. While technically not in Tulum, swimming with the turtles at Akumal Beach was an incredible experience. There’s a LOT of controversy around whether you have to pay to snorkel or not… The people at the dive shop (which has been mentioned on countless blogs as “the place” to get the honest answer) even said you have to pay.
Honestly, if we wouldn’t have gone with a guide, we probably never would have found the turtles. These guys are trained to find the turtles and you’re assured before you hand over the money that if you don’t see at least one turtle, you’ll get your money back. Thankfully, we saw a LOT of turtles!
Cost: 250 pesos/person which is under $15.
Tip: Get there early! We were the first people to go out so the sand and seagrass wasn’t cloudy from the big groups who come later in the day.

While we’re only scratching the surface on all of the fabulous things to do in Tulum, we think this is a pretty great list to get you started! If we skipped over one of your favorites, let us know in the comments!

After spending just shy of a week in Tulum, we really felt like we had a good grasp on the area… After all, it’s not THAT big of an area to cover. As we mentioned in last week’s post, we had done a lot of research on Tulum before we went, but we still had a few questions that just couldn’t be answered without actually being there and seeing for ourselves. We’re going to guess other people traveling to Tulum might have some of the same questions. Our guide to Tulum should answer most of your burning questions and hopefully give you insight in to a few things you might not have known about!

Your Guide to Tulum

Difference between Tulum town and Tulum beach

There are two different areas of Tulum; Tulum Beach and Downtown Tulum. The Tulum beach area runs the length of the beach and is about three miles long. Tulum Beach Road consists of the beach resorts, tons of restaurants, shopping and more and Downtown Tulum is exactly that – downtown!

Beach clubs in Tulum

Just like beach clubs in other places of the world, beach clubs in Tulum are fabulous. Most of them are connected to a beachfront hotel or beachfront restaurant. If you aren’t staying at the Hotel, usually, you can pay a small fee to enjoy the amenities it offers. Usually this fee can be paid by purchasing a certain amount of food or drink.

Beach Access in Tulum

Beach access in Tulum can be a little tricky if you aren’t staying beachfront. In order to get on the beach, you either need to purchase food or drink from one of the beach clubs, or enter via the public beach, which is a good ways away from most of the fun.

Dos Ceibas Beach Club

Where to stay in Tulum?

We stayed on the jungle side of Tulum which is right across the street from the beach but it’s still different than staying on the beach. We will definitely stay on the beach side at one of the beach hotels next time so we don’t have to find a beach club every time to be able to access the beach and we’d definitely recommend you do the same.

Outdoor restaurants in Tulum

Most restaurants and shops in Tulum are outside or “open air” style restaurants, with lots of bugs. We’ve been to other tropical destinations but have never felt the mosquitos as much as we did in Tulum. The copal helps immensely, but be sure to bring bug spray (with deet!) and apply frequently. Also, with most places being outside and the intense humidity, you’ll definitely want to plan your attire appropriately.

The food in Tulum

If you read last week’s post on the best restaurants in Tulum, you can pretty much skip over the section. If not – listen up! Eating in Tulum it’s not like eating in America or other countries for that matter. Eating in Tulum as an art form… It has meaning and purpose and so much life. It’s an experience in itself. Better yet, just read last week’s post!

A few of our favorite restaurants in Tulum:

Hartwood – difficult to get in to, but so, so worth it! $$$

Gitano – One of the best vibes, with delicious cocktails $$

The Real Coconut – Clean eating at its finest $$

Jicama salad at Hartwood Tulum

Happy Hours in Tulum

There are quite a few happy hour spots in the Tulum Beach area. 2 for 1 cocktails is the most common type of happy hour specials we saw and it was usually for margaritas and mojitos. If you saw last week’s Tulum food post, you know we LOVED the passion fruit mojito at Tulumunchies, which we got on happy hour! We loved being able to get tasty drinks for a discount to start off our nights.

Beach Swings in Tulum

If you looked up the best Instagram spots in Tulum, you’ve no doubt seen some of the gorgeous swings lining bars and beaches. Most of those lists only list swings at some of the bigger places like Coco Tulum (which does have gorgeous white swings, BTW). But the beach swings are literally everywhere. At least half of the restaurants (probably more) we went to had them. They’re not some hidden secret you have to go search out. Just blink and you’ll find them.

Is Tulum Affordable?

There are a few things you have to take into consideration when it comes to deciding if Tulum is affordable. We went during a very slow time, so our accommodations were incredibly affordable.
When it comes to the affordability of food in Tulum, we felt the prices, in most cases, were somewhat lower than those of any normal city in the US.

Meals: Most between $10-$15/person

Drinks: The average cocktail was roughly $8. Cocktails in Tulum seemed to be far lower priced than what we’re used to, especially for the quality!

Accommodations: We paid $40/night at Sunset Hotel Tulum, (because of AirBnB credit, we paid even less!). However, we do know most of the year, especially at the nicer hotels, you can spend upwards of $400usd/ night.

Activities: There are SO many! Cenotes cost between $2 and $15. Be sure to have pesos here as most are cash only!

Burning Copal for mosquitos

While we highly recommend bringing a deet-based mosquito spray like the Off Deep Woods travel size bug spray. BUT, just about every restaurant you enter will be burning Copal to help ward off those pesky mosquitoes. You’ll see the restaurant or beach clubs in Tulum walking around with what essentially looks like a small pot that is smoking (don’t twist our words with that one), this is Copal and we thought it smelled amazing!

Air Conditioning

This one was kinda big for us (but not big enough for us to really care). We are very hot natured people so having air conditioning is one of the first things we look for when booking a place to stay. Tulum is trying to remain as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. That being said, many of the hotels are run off of solar panels or similar contraptions. Meaning, many either don’t have air conditioning or don’t run the air conditioning during the day…. Which, for us, was totally understandable.
At our hotel in Tulum, the air conditioning would turn off at 7:30am and not come back on until 7:30pm. For us this was okay because we just planned our day around leaving by 7:30 am and then didn’t spend much time there during the day unless we needed to shower or get ready. Be sure to keep this in mind when looking where to stay in Tulum.

How to get to Tulum

There are multiple ways to get from Cancun to Tulum; the bus, a taxi, shuttle or renting a car. We think renting a car is the best option available for the 2 hour trip from Cancun to Tulum. It will give you the freedom and ability to not only explore Tulum to the fullest without having to pay for taxis every time you need to go somewhere, but also to explore on the way down from Cancun to Tulum.
The drive from Cancun to Tulum is incredibly easy, as it’s only the one main highway all the way down to Tulum. The roads are easy to navigate, just make sure you watch speed limit signs as the speeds change quickly and if you’re a nervous driver, stay in the right lane. Additionally, Mexico is big on texting and driving so make sure to keep your eyes on the road and not on your phone!

Do I need a car in Tulum?

If you’re planning to explore more than just the immediate area you’re staying in, we definitely recommend renting a car. We loved being able to drive to places to eat, explore or just sightsee at our free will. To really get to see everything there is to see in Tulum we think a car is absolutely necessary. But be sure your accommodation offers parking, because parking in Tulum can be a little difficult.

There is no Uber in Tulum

With Uber popping up everywhere, we were somewhat surprised to hear there was no Uber in Tulum. BUT, once we arrived, we quickly saw why. There are taxis everywhere in Tulum. Morning, noon and night, the taxis are there.

Tips for taking a taxi in Tulum:

Pricing changes throughout the day. More demand = higher prices.

Most drivers speak at least a bit of english.

Ask the driver “how much from here to x destination” to get their pricing.

When they give you their price, haggle with the driver a little BEFORE you get in the car. You should be able to get their price down at least a little.

Renting a car in Mexico

Rental cars in Mexico are fairly cheap. In Cancun, you’ll find several of the big US rental car companies like Hertz, Budget, Fox, Alamo, Enterprise (which is what we recommend) as well as other local rental car companies.

Cost: Roughly $10-$15/ day, but when you add insurance is when renting a car in Mexico gets expensive.

Insurance: About $20/day for liability coverage and $30/day for full coverage. Mexico requires everyone to pay for liability insurance on rental cars. Most US car insurance and/or US credit card companies typically won’t cover rental cars in Mexico but check with them to confirm.

Damage waiver: $150-$2500. Taking the physical damage waiver is up to each renter. Depending on how much coverage you take for physical damage will determine the hold put on the card. Taking no coverage on the car will have the highest hold around $1500-$2500 US dollars. One of the highest hold’s for a rental car we have ever heard of. Taking the full damage waiver will have the lowest hold around $150 on top of the rental.

Parking in the beach area is limited

This one is no joke. If you aren’t staying in the beach area and are able to walk most places or ride a bike, beware. Parking is incredibly limited. Some restaurants offer a couple parking spots and there is one, maybe two general parking areas, but other than that parking in Tulum is extremely limited.

Tulum’s speed bumps

The roads in Tulum are easy to drive on other than the SPEED BUMPS. They are huge and, at times, hard to see, so stay alert and make sure to pay attention to these. They can really do damage to your car if you go too fast.

Bike rentals in Tulum

If you aren’t renting a car, we highly recommend renting bikes. Bike rentals in Tulum are fairly easy to come by and range in price from $3/day to $15/day. Ask your hotel concierge for who they recommend and if you don’t have a concierge, just take a stroll down the beach road, you’ll see plenty of places to rent bikes.

Cenotes in Tulum

Tulum and the entire Yucatán Peninsula is known for cenotes. A cenote is a deep water-filled sinkhole that has natural pools that make their way to the surface when the underground cavern collapses. Some cenotes are caves or caverns, some cenotes are totally enclosed and some are semi-open. There’s plenty to choose from in Tulum. We visited two of the best cenotes in Tulum – Cenote Dos Ojos and Cenote Calavera.

Cenote Calavera

Overall, Tulum is one of the most special places we’ve ever been and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to escape for a long weekend! Our guide to Tulum touched on a ton of things, but was there one thing you were curious about that we didn’t touch on? Let us know in the comments!

With everything going on in the world, we couldn’t have dreamed of a better time to visit Tulum, Mexico. In other words, life had gotten… weird. We’d been feeling stuck and genuinely down. Early one week, Thomas decided it was time for us to hit the road. Maybe I should say hit the skies. We enjoyed the most perfect few days on the beaches of Tulum, resting, relaxing and finding some of the best restaurants in Tulum. Eating in Tulum is so much more than grabbing a bite and moving on. Eating in Tulum is filled with purpose, meaning and passion. We decided where to stay in Tulum solely based on where the most restaurants we wanted to visit were located (and it’s a good idea for you to do the same!).

Back when I was working for CheapCaribbean.com, I actually wrote an entire set of articles on Tulum… What I, along with just about everyone else, failed to realize is, without ever setting foot in Tulum, you can’t possibly know the magic this former fishing village in Mexico possesses (Most of the time, CheapCaribbean doesn’t actually send it’s staff writers to visit the places they put out information on, so you could see where that led to a few issues). Nonetheless, I wanted to clear a few things up, so what better of a way than to write our own articles?!

The Best Restaurants in Tulum

ARCA Tulum

We actually had no intention of stopping in at ARCA Tulum – we were just strolling along after our amazing dinner at Hartwood and couldn’t resist the super cute vibes!

What we recommend:

Like we said, we’d already eaten dinner in Tulum and weren’t technically looking for more food or drinks…. But for some reason we ordered the scallop crudo, topped with a basil and coconut salsa verde, positioned atop a chia seed chip that provided the PERFECT crunch with the soft fish.
Drinks: Mayami Nice – Rum, Xtabentun (fermented honey liquor), passion fruit, almond orgeat (sweetener) and lemon. Har Mar Suprstar – Mezcal, ginger, honey, lemon and thyme. The Mayami nice was definitely the better of the two drinks, but if you like Mezcal, give the Har Mar Superstar at ARCA Tulum a try!
Location: Tulum Beach across from Hotel Playa Xcanan

Bonita Burger Bar Downtown Tulum

This little burger bar is absolutely adorable. From the giant “BONITA” sign out front to the colorful decor of the restaurant and the amazing food, this spot is not to be missed… And dare we say, the best burger in Tulum? We found Bonita Burger Bar via Instagram (read how we find restaurants and vendors on Instagram) and are so happy we did.

What we recommend:

Aloha burger, Peanut & Chipotle burger and fries. The vegan cheesecake is worth a try. The one they had was goji berry. It wasn’t our favorite dessert ever but it was so unique, we couldn’t pass up trying it.

Dos Ceibas Beach Club

Dos Ceibas was the beach club our AirBnB/hotel offered access to. While it may not be as picturesque as some of the other beach clubs in Tulum, it’s still super cute and has tasty food, drinks and beach beds!

What we recommend:

Shrimp Ceviche and the Agua de Piedra still water. Agua de Piedra is by far the best still water we’ve had and was available at every place we went to other than ARCA.
Location: Tulum Beach @ Hotel Dos Ceibas Eco Retreat Tulum

Food Peddlers

This might be a little intimidating to some, buuuuut, throughout the day, in the Tulum beach area you’ll see people riding down the street on bicycle carts with coolers of food and drinks. Mostly, you’ll see locals stopping at the carts to grab a bite to eat or drink. Don’t be intimidated by these guys. Stop them, ask what they have… Usually, it’s all sorts of delicious things! From tacos to tamales to empanadas and more. You never know, it could be some of the best food in Tulum!
Pro tip: These guys are cash only, so be sure to have pesos, especially in smaller denominations.

Gitano Tulum

Gitano Tulum was one of those places we’d been eyeing from the minute we first learned of it! For years we’d been watching their Instagram and other social channels, admiring some of the best drinks in Tulum and dreaming of snapping the infamous pic in front of one of the hottest Instagram spots in Tulum – the neon Gitano sign!

What we recommend:

Red snapper tostada, apparently this one sells out nightly, so don’t miss it. Served cold, the shrimp chaya tortilla tacos with cilantro, sweet onion and lemon jam, while super spicy, they were unlike anything else we’ve ever had before and a real treat for our tastebuds.

Gitano Tulum is known for their mezcal cocktails, so, we of course went straight mezcal and shared them all. We started with a mezcal mule (Union Joven Mezcal, Pentimans, ginger beer and lime), Gitano Margarita (mezcal, lime, rosemary and cucumber) and the Gitano Carajillo (mezcal, cold brew and cacao honey).
Pro tip: Go at night and order all the mezcal drinks, but if you aren’t a mezcal fan, you can get any of their signature cocktails with other liquors or your average run of the mill cocktail. BUT if you can stomach mezcal (some people just cant) try something from their list of signature cocktails.

Hartwood Tulum

My oh my. This was another one of those spots we’d been dreaming of for years and it beat every expectation we had. From the food to the insanely friendly servers, there wasn’t a thing we’d change. The decor here is insanely cute and they do everything they can to keep the vibe of this place totally Tulumy.

What we recommend:

The Costillas Al Agave (Pork Ribs), Ensalada de Jicama (Jicama Salad), Ceviche Yucatan, Passion in The Jungle (Rum, passion fruit and watermelon), Flamingo (Vodka, dragon fruit and lime), Cenote (Mayan Gin, substituted for vodka, real ginger, lime and mint), corn & honey ice cream and vanilla, peanuts and caramel ice cream. The ice cream is a MUST try.
Pro tip: Hartwood reservations are not usually easy to come by. Try to make your reservation at least a month in advance by emailing Reservations@HartwoodTulum.com. Also keep in mind, they’re closed Monday and Tuesday and only accept cash (but can do PayPal)!
Another thing to remember- the Hartwood Tulum menu changes daily based on what’s available and/or fresh, so the items we loved may or may not be available when you visit Tulum.

Ki-Bok Coffee

Popped in to Ki-Bok Coffee the morning we went to Matcha Mamma for smoothie bowls. We knew we had a long list of things to do in Tulum so we wanted to make sure we were well fueled, so we stopped here. We sat in the back garden room which was covered in plants and was totally serene. The staff was so inviting and nice. Easily one of the best coffees we’ve ever had!

What we recommend:

Chilaquiles rojos with homemade tortilla chips and americano coffee (SOO good).
Pro tip: There is parking around the corner. The restaurant is all about “being present” so no WiFi.
Location: Tulum Town @ Av Tulum & Calle Centauro Sur

Kookie by Kitchen Table Tulum

Kookie might just be the most random find on our list of the best restaurants in Tulum…. We found it searching Instagram and it’s undeniably a hidden gem in Tulum. Owned by the same people who run Kitchen Table Tulum (which was closed while we were there), Kookie is a delivery-only cookie spot with six unique flavors.

What we recommend:

Lunette (butter cookie and house pineapple jam), Double chocolate (chocolate cookie filled with dark chocolate), Peanuts (butter cookie filled with house peanut butter and house hibiscus jam), Cinnamon (butter cookie filled with apple and cinnamon), Gorilaz (chocolate cookie, banana cream and lime meringue) and The Legit (butter cookie with chocolate chips).
Pro tip: You have to order online through Tomato.MX by 8:30 pm.

La Pinche Taqueria Food Truck

We stopped in here our first night when we were absolutely starving after our drive from Cancun to Tulum. It is part of a food truck park with a few other food trucks and a bar called Tulumunchies, right on Tulum Beach road.

What we recommend:

TACOS (Al pastor, chicken and fish) and the guacamole with homemade tortilla chips.
Location: Tulum Beach across from La Zebra Tulum Hotel

Matcha Mamma Tulum

I know we’ve said this a dozen times, but Matcha Mama Tulum was another one of those places we’d been dreaming of. The swings, the smoothie bowls, ALL OF IT. This little shack might go down as one of the best restaurants in Tulum (can you call a shack a restaurant? We don’t know, but it’s definitely on our list) and if it’s not on your list of Tulum restaurants, it should definitely be on your list of the best Instagram spots in Tulum!

What we recommend:

Mamacita smooth bowl (matcha, almond milk, banana, mango, peanut butter and topped with amaranth which is a pseudo-cereal.) and Mango Tango Smoothie (mango, banana, ginger, turmeric, passion fruit, GOJI BERRIES, honey and oats. Topped with bee pollen, shredded coconut, chia, almonds and fresh fruit). We have a thing for goji berries.
Location: Tulum Beach across from Casa Aakbal Hotel

Mateo’s

We stopped in here for lunch after a morning at Cenote Calavera and we were pleasently surprised. Mateo’s is one of the first restaurants you see when entering the Tulum Beach area. Mateo’s doesn’t look as “Tulumy” as some of the other spots on our list of the best restaurants in Tulum, but we’d stack the food up next to the best of them!

What we recommend:

We dined on the white fish ceviche, fish tacos (4 tacos with white fish, chipotle slaw, mango salsa and secret sauce), served with rice and beans. This was also the only place we were served complimentary chips and salsa in Tulum, both were DELICIOUS and made our Tex-Mex lovin’ hearts so happy. If you enjoy a good agua fresca, definitely order the strawberry agua fresca.
Location: North Tulum Beach across from Tulum Bay Hotel

Posada Margherita

Yet another on the list of restaurants in Tulum that has been on our list of must visit spots. Posada Margherita is a true oasis. The walkway from the main road is lined with plants and greenhouses while the beach area is lined with picturesque white daybeds and the most stunning shades of blue. Definitely on our list of the best Instagram spots in Tulum.

What we recommend:

We stopped at Posada Margherita post-lunch/pre-dinner and were bummed we weren’t going to be able to try the pizza or pasta, but opted for scoops of their gelato. We ordered the berries as well as the pistachio – both were absolutely delicious and we highly recommend
Pro tip: You need to order food to have beach bed access. They prefer cash but there is the option to use Zelle if you have it.
Location: Tulum Beach @ Posada Margherita Hotel

The Real Coconut Tulum

The Real Coconut is another one we’ve been eyeing for some time now! They focus on total wellness and it’s evident from the minute you step foot in the restaurant. You can tell they care about every minute detail, not only from the food and drinks they serve but in the people who work there and the perfectly curated setup of the restaurant.

What we recommend:

Breakfast – Ranchero Eggs (quite possibly the best we’ve ever had), Seasonal Chia Parfait (chia, fresh coconut milk, coconut yogurt, mango chia jam, and fresh mango) with the super sprinkles (toasted hemp, chia, chopped almonds, cacao nibs, coconut flakes) and the fresh mint tea.
Afternoon Snack – Bone broth (slow simmered for 12 hours), Pinada Ice Cream Smoothie (Coconut milk, frozen pineapple & bananas and dates), Mint Passion Healthy Hydration (fresh coconut milk, ginger juice, mint, passion fruit and maple syrup, muddled) and of course, more Agua De Piedra.
Pro tip: Go for breakfast for the perfect start to your day. It’s also a great afternoon spot to escape the sun and lounge around.

Taqueria Honorio

We had Taqueria Honorio on our list, but may not have known exactly where it was without the help of our AirBnB host. It’s right off the main street in Tulum town/ Downtown Tulum. We’d actually passed it the day before and wondered why the heck so many people outside! These tacos are easily some of the best tacos in Tulum and are totally worth the trip to Downtown Tulum! If you’re looking for the best tacos in Tulum, this spot should definitely be at the top of your must-try list.

What we recommend:

TACOS (Carne Asada, Pollo Chicken and Lechón Al Horno Pork), Pineapple Agua Fresca, Horchata Agua Fresca, Mexican Coke and Cream Cheese Empanada.
Pro tip: Look for the yellow building with tons of people (probably mostly locals) hanging outside and bring cash.
Location: Tulum Town @ Satélite Sur and Andromeda Ote

Tulumunchies Food Truck Park Bar

If a city has food trucks, we will find them. This little food truck park in Tulum is one of the only ones that had a bar and THIS BAR was fabulous.

What we recommend:

Passion Fruit Mojito! We stopped in during happy hour so the mojitos and margaritas were even cheaper. If you even remotely enjoy passion fruit, this mojito is a must!
Pro tip: The mojitos and margaritas happy hour is from 6-8 pm.
Location: Tulum Beach across from La Zebra Tulum Hotel

Every restaurant in Tulum was beyond anything we imagined. We consistently left places with our taste buds on a high. Fresh, local, ingredients at every turn, brought so many unique flavors together… From the ceviche, to the fish tacos, to the smoothies and even the burgers. There is something about Tulum food that draws you in to not only the food, but the entire town. Whether it was the higher end spots like Hartwood or local food stands, everything we feasted on showed how exquisite all restaurants in Tulum are! Basically, you can expect the food in Tulum to absolutely blow your socks off.
