Does everyone feel like they know everything about their hometown? I know I sure do did! Last week, I had the opportunity to head to my hometown of Mesquite, Texas and check out the city’s best foodie spots. Before my foodie tour last week, I would have never considered Mesquite a powerhouse for dining, but at the end of the day, I was convinced! I spent the day traveling the city with Judy Skowron, experiencing some of the #RealTexasFlavor that Mesquite had to offer.
Our first stop? Fuel City Tacos. This is the second of only two locations for this mega gas station! They are known for their cheap gas and delicious tacos and elote. I had never been to the original Fuel City Tacos, so I knew this would be a real treat.
The first thing you see when you walk in their big doors is this giant Texas shaped beer cooler. I’m thinking I need one of these for my patio! The shop is lined with exotic animal heads that the owner has collected over the years, it really was a sight to see!
We just couldn’t leave without having a couple tacos and a serving of their elote. In addition to my delicious corn, I snagged a barbacoa taco and pastor taco, both had my mouth watering. Definitely some of the best street tacos I have ever had! This is definitely a spot you don’t want to miss!
After we snacked on a few tacos and some delicious corn, Judy gave me the rundown on our next stop… House of Gyros! I had never heard of this little establishment, and after arriving, I knew everyone needed to hear about it.
House of Gyros is a little spot is just past downtown Mesquite, down from Mesquite High School. We spoke with the owners and it has been open for just over a year. If you peek at their Yelp page, you’ll see a FIVE STAR rating and reviews that will blow your mind!
We started off with the meatballs soup, which has strong nodes of lemon and lots of rice in it. I had never had anything quite like it, but it was delicious. The pita bread served with it was the most delicious pita bread I had ever tasted, you could literally taste the love in this bread!
I have a serious love for gyros, which lead me to choose their classic Lamb gyro, which is served on their delicious pita bread and homemade tzatziki sauce. They also add “greek fries” which were very similar to steak fries with a delicious seasoning on them. This was the most amazing gyro I have ever tasted.
Judy opted for the souvlaki plate which came with chicken and pork kabobs, a small greek salad and more of their delicious fries. Her meat was so tender it almost melted in our mouths.
Last, but certainly not least was the loukoumades! These light and fluffy dough balls are drenched in honey and topped with cinnamon. I could have eaten all four of these on my own. I have never had anything quite like this but the warmth and gooeyness of this sweet treat has my mouth watering just thinking about it.
As I said, this is a little spot, tucked away in the heart of Mesquite. As you can see, it’s not a fancy chain that has all the bells and whistles. They serve you from disposable plates, with disposable cutlery, but they have a whole lotta love in everything they serve. We were able to speak with the owner and his wife and the amount of pride and love beaming from them was enough to make me want to come back and visit this spot over and over again. This was the best Greek food I have ever had, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious meal!
For dessert, we headed just down the road to Scrumbscious Burgers and Pieshakes. What is a pieshake you ask? A pie shake is a shake… With an entire piece of pie in it. Both the ice cream and pie are homemade, which of course makes everything more delicious. The couple who owns Scrumbcious also has a booth at the fair. This year, their big hit was their fried cheeseburger… We had it, and it was nothing short of amazing.
Judy and I split the Razzleberry and Chocolate Cream pie shakes.
Our next stop was Kookie Haven! Kookie Haven is a small shop, owned by three sisters with some big goals! These ladies have concocted some of the most delicious square cupcakes as well as cookies. Kookie Haven is unlike any other pastry shop I have been to. They offer customizable cookies and cupcakes. Have a crazy idea for some flavor combinations? These are the ladies you want to see!
Although their shop is small, they have a display case with lots of their goodies.
Kookie Haven’s motto is certainly a great one!
I sampled their wedding cake and fell in love! I went home with their chocolate buttercream, Italian creme, carrot cake and wedding cake.
Needless to say, these delicious treats didn’t last long in my house. I can’t wait to place a special order for some crazy concoctions I have swirling in my head!
I had the best time in Mesquite last week. I am genuinely amazed at how many places there were that I didn’t even know existed in my own hometown! There are so many great little shops and awesome places to dine, anyone could make it a day trip and spend all day hanging out in Mesquite!

Thank you to Judy Skowron and The City of Mesquite for showing me around on such a fabulous day.

The wedding cakes are adorable and look delicious. Also loving the giant Texas cooler, Washington does not have that same sort of state pride, haha.

Kookie Haven looks SO good! I'm also a fan of the Texas cooler ha, ha. If I'm ever in Mesquite, I'm headed to these places for sure!
I haven't been to Fuel City yet but I've heard great things about the first location so I'm eager to try it. House of Gryos is one of my favorite small, family owned restaurant to eat. The owner and his wife are lovely – sweet, kind, and so helpful to tell me about a few dishes I had not tried before. The souvlaki is wonderful and the I love having the fries in the gyro.
Scrumbscious pie shakes are great! Get the Razzleberry!
Kookie Haven is my new favorite dessert place though. Those ladies are fantastic! I have picked up cupcakes a few times to take home to my family and once to bring to work. The flavors are amazing, even better than Sprinkles, which is really saying something.
All of the food looks so so so good!

I thing I love about Texas is that everyone likes to put things in the shape of Texas. That cooler is so neat. Also, literally all of this food looks delish. I love gyros!
A foodie tour seems like such a fun thing to do, especially in your own hometown. The pictures alone had my mouth watering. Those tacos look amazing! And who wouldn't love a Texas sized beer color on their patio?! Haha xx Merisa | Monogrammed Magnolias
